Goliath Had a Brother

Goliath Had a Brother

By Francis Frangipane
(En Español)

Here's the scene: You are in a battle against sickness, oppression or some similar struggle. You seek God, and in some way the grace of God touches your life. Your victory may have come through a word or prayer or some other encouragement, but you absolutely know the Lord has delivered you. Using the five smooth stones of divine grace, you defeated your Goliath.

But then, a few weeks or months or perhaps years later, all the old symptoms suddenly return with a vengeance. If you were struggling with an illness, it manifests worse than ever; if your battle was regarding a relationship or a particular sin, it seems as though all progress has been lost. You are back to square one.

Have you ever been there? These negative experiences can drain the faith from your heart. You lose the anticipation and power of faith, and a spiritual paralysis immobilizes your soul. You may still attend church, but your faith is unresponsive. When others testify of deliverance, you worry secretly that they, too, will "lose their healing."

For many, the result is one of faith-shaking disillusionment. Scripture says, "Hope deferred makes the heart sick" (Prov. 13:12). This "heartsickness" is a spiritual disease that can cripple your walk with God. Remember, faith is the substance of the things you hope for; if you lose hope, your faith becomes hollow. How can you trust God when it seems as though He let you down? You wonder: Did I lose my breakthrough, or was I only deceiving myself and never really had it?

Dear one, it is very possible that what you are experiencing is not a loss of God's blessing but an entirely new spiritual battle. This new war is a very clever and effective deception that Satan uses to try and worm his way back into the lives of those delivered by God.

I had been praying about this very thing, this recurring battle, when the Holy Spirit spoke to my heart: "Goliath had a brother". I was immediately reminded of David's war against the Philistine giant. We all know that David became a great hero by trusting God and defeating Goliath. However, things changed as we see in 2 Samuel 21:

"Now when the Philistines were at war again with Israel, David went down and his servants with him; and as they fought against the Philistines, David became weary. Then Ishbi-benob, who was among the descendants of the giant . . . intended to kill David. But Abishai the son of Zeruiah helped him, and struck the Philistine and killed him" (2 Samuel 21:15-17).

Years after David conquered Goliath as a lad, after he became king he had to face other giants. In fact, 1 Chronicles 20:5 reveals that at least one of those warring against David was "the brother of Goliath," and four were his children (2 Sam. 21:22). We can imagine that these giants, being Goliath's kin, looked like Goliath, boasted like him, dressed like him and probably even smelled like him. The Scripture says that while fighting one of the descendants of Goliath, "David became weary" (2 Sam. 21:15).

The Bible is silent as to what might have been going through the king's mind as he battled these giants. Perhaps he wondered, I thought I killed Goliath. What is he doing back? But Goliath had not come back; he was dead! David was actually fighting the giant's kin. It just looked like the same battle!

Likewise, you also have had many successful victories. Just because the current giant you are facing looks like one you defeated in the past, do not accept the lie that you never really won the first battle! By the strength of God's grace, you trusted the Almighty and conquered your Goliath. The first giant is dead. Satan is masquerading as your former enemy so he can slip past your shield of faith and thus regain entrance into your life. Resist him. Do not accept the lie that you were never delivered. Stand in faith. Faith is the victory that overcomes the world (1 John 5:4).

The living God who helped you conquer Goliath will empower you to overcome his brother as well.

Father, I come to You as Your servant. Like David, I have become weary with fighting an enemy I thought I had defeated. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, however, I expose the lie that this is the same foe I previously conquered. In Jesus' name, I rebuke the enemy. I ask You, Lord, to send angels to strengthen me supernaturally, just as angels often strengthened Jesus. In the name of the Lord, Amen.

Yom Kippur - Day of Atonement

Ikväll börjar Yom Kippur som är en av Herrens högtider. Det är den heligaste dagen i det judiska folkets kalender.
Denna text kommer från en messiansk församling:

Yom Kippur - Day of Atonement

As we stand before the holiest of days in the Jewish calendar, Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement), we reflect on the meaning of this day in the light of scriptures:

"This is to be a lasting ordinance for you: On the tenth day of the seventh month you must deny yourselves and not do any work-whether native-born or a foreigner residing among you-because on this day atonement will be made for you, to cleanse you. Then, before the Lord, you will be clean from all your sins. It is a day of Sabbath rest, and you must deny yourselves; it is a lasting ordinance." (Leviticus 16:29-31)

We commemorate this day as the Lord appointed it and each year it is still a sight difficult to get used to. Many who have never been in Israel during Yom Kippur will have a hard time imagining how the whole country, the entire nation come to a halt. It is as though life literally pauses and there's a sense of eternity in the air. The country literally stops for a day.

It is the only day once a year when there is no work, no transportation of any kind (public or private), the streets are clear of cars, and children fill the streets and roads with their bicycles. All malls, stores, restaurants, coffee shops, private businesses as well as public institutions, from the smallest to the biggest are all closed. There is no TV, no radio, no entertainment of any kind.

The whole nation is so aware of the importance of this day that even such secular city like Tel Aviv is immersed in fasting and praying. People go to synagogues, participate in traditional Jewish prayers of repentance, seeking the ultimate redemption: for their name to be written in the Book of Life.

In Leviticus 16:32-34 it speaks about the work of the high priest who was to make atonement on behalf of the whole nation once a year. The atonement would be enough to cover their sins for a year.
"The priest who is anointed and ordained to succeed his father as high priest is to make atonement. He is to put on the sacred linen garments and make atonement for the Most Holy Place, for the tent of meeting and the altar, and for the priests and all the members of the community. This is to be a lasting ordinance for you: Atonement is to be made once a year for all the sins of the Israelites." (Lev.16:32-34)

We, as believers, know that Yeshua is the fulfillment of Day of Atonement, as He has provided an eternal redemption ONCE FOR ALL.

"But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that are now already here, he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not made with human hands, that is to say, is not a part of this creation. He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption." (Hebrews 9:11-12)

Join us in prayer for the salvation of the nation of Israel. As they open their hearts in seeking God and redemption during this holy day, we fast together with our nation for their repentance, salvation through their Messiah Yeshua and reconciliation to God.

Also, please pray for the peace of Jerusalem and this nation, and for churches and congregations in Israel to continue growing and walking in their God-given destiny."

To Speak or Not to Speak?

Från Rivers of Eden:

To Speak or Not to Speak? – Speaking from Outside the Walls

When I moved out and away from anything remotely resembling organized religion, shame and guilt tried to move into my life. I felt disqualified. Over time I began to see that God alone qualifies me. I am not qualified by being a member of a church. I am not even qualified by being in a church. I am the church. I am qualified by just BEING in Christ. That is a great place to live.

Unfortunately, the church today disqualifies many based on externals alone. An answer of ‘no’ to any of these questions and bam, they stamp on you ‘DISQUALIFIED’. Any answer that cuts against religious form in which they determine that you are a perceived lone ranger and bam, they stamp on you ‘DISQUALIFIED’. Look at whom Jesus picked. Look at how Jesus moved. Enough said.

The pertinent questions: Are you covered? Who is your covering? Who are you accountable to? Do you attend a church? Did they send you out? Did you leave in good standing? What are your beliefs?

Our answers:
No, I am not covered by a denomination or an organization. Jesus is my covering.
Yes I am accountable to many whom God calls me to walk with and alongside in life. My relationships are formed by the Spirit just like Jesus did in His life.
Define church. You asked me if I attend a church. Define church. Does it count when I meet with a small group of people over the course of 5 years? Our numbers do not go above 8 but we know each other through and through and have walked through life together in every way. Is that church? Or what about meeting in Starbucks and simply talking to people that are seeking the Lord? Is that church? Define church.

Do you get the picture? I am not advocating rebellion or independence. But, for many years I lived in shame thinking that because I left the church I was disqualified to speak to the church, for the church, or as the church. How can I leave the church when I am the church with Christ in me, the hope of glory? Years ago changed my perspective quite a bit. The lens of conformity and tradition fell from my eyes like scales. The lens of performance and program fell off instantly.

Define church. How can it actually be defined? I know I may stir up anger in many reading into what I am saying. You may have thought you knew me and now you know you don’t.
Here’s the deal. My love for the mystery, the beauty and the creativity of the Body of Christ has intensified with a passion when I was able to look at it without the lens of religion, charismatic form, or a denominational bent. That was not possible when I was in the system. I missed the forest for the trees. Forgive the cliché.

I do not feel self-righteous in any way. I don’t think, “I have it. They don’t.” Despite my journey of being a forerunner, I know that God is still healing my life, ministering to me daily, and loving me always. He has kept me from bitterness and anger in my heart  when religion or tradition blinded me from the Lord Himself. I have walked out to walk into a broad place of intimacy in Christ. More to come.
